In honor of Singles Day, let’s take a look at the history of this holiday and how it has come to be celebrated today. If you are a single, or you know someone who is, it can be a great time to celebrate your independence and accomplishments.
History
In the early days of music, singles were released in a variety of formats. The first was a phonograph record, which featured a two to four minute playback on each side. They were manufactured in a variety of sizes, ranging from the 7-inch disc of the phonograph to the 10-inch shellac disc.
The next logical step was to make the recording onto vinyl. This gave the music a clearer sound and less surface noise. It also allowed for a more flexible and portable format.
During the 1980s, vinyl experienced a major drop in sales. However, it was the cult of the 7-inch 45 single that has brought it back to life.
Singles are usually the first release from an artist. Generally, they are released before an album and may even include tracks that didn’t make the cut.
Celebrating accomplishments of singles
Most folks will no doubt have no doubt heard of Singles’ Day, but what about the other half of the equation? Well, a bit of planning can go a long way. It may be time to get out of the house and into a social circle of likeminded peers. You’ll be in a much better mood for it. To ensure a smooth transition, it’s wise to plan well in advance. A pre-game strategy is essential, even if it means leaving early to avoid the dreaded last minute checkins. Moreover, it’s a great way to meet new people and learn about their lives. The more you know, the better prepared you’ll be for the inevitable bumps and bruises. Getting out of the house and enjoying a social event is just as much fun as catching up with the oldies.
Livestreaming sales
A new survey by AlixPartners reports that more than two-thirds of Chinese consumers have purchased items from a livestream in the past year. And more than 300 celebrities and company executives are expected to participate in Singles’ Day livestreams.
According to the survey, eighty-eight percent of respondents from first-tier cities say they plan to shop during the event via livestream. In tier-3 and tier-4 cities, that figure is seventy-six percent.
For those who aren’t familiar with the event, Singles’ Day is an annual shopping festival in China. Its total sales are expected to top previous records this year. However, the slowing economy and regulatory scrutiny have dampened sales.
Despite the negative media attention surrounding the broadcast hosts, livestreaming remains a major component of Chinese consumption. The sector has seen rapid growth in China, and overseas brands have benefitted from it. Livestreaming helps introduce new brands to the market, bolsters credibility, and can be used to offer greater discounts.
Deals in first-tier cities
The first tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have a big economic impact. However, the biggest challenges in this particular space are related to the lack of consumer demand and weak e-commerce penetration. These are not to mention the challenges of sourcing and delivering quality goods at competitive prices.
The tier system is a popular way to categorize China’s many cities. It is also an attractive marketing tool for tech juggernauts such as Alibaba and JD. Considering that Chinese cities are geographically dispersed, a centralized sales channel will be the best bet.
It’s a fact that lower-tier Chinese cities have less affluent shoppers and a lower e-commerce penetration. Technology juggernauts like Alibaba feel that a robust and scalable sales channel is the key to continued growth.
